Our Team
Alissa Nasiatka, Executive Director
After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, I have been working in early childhood education for more than 25 years, creating nurturing, play-based learning environments for young children. I believe that children learn best in the context of trusting, responsive relationships with the adults who support them, and I view parents as essential partners in their child’s education. I am deeply committed to building a strong foundation of social–emotional development, helping children learn to communicate, cooperate, express themselves, and build confidence. I believe that open-ended, hands-on experiences help children feel safe to explore, problem-solve, take risks, and discover their own abilities. Having served as a preschool director and administrator in multiple programs, I am excited to bring my past experience to my new role. My goal is always to create a warm, supportive space where every child feels valued, capable, and excited to learn, every teacher feels appreciated and supported, and every parent feels respected and confident that we are meeting their child’s needs.
Outside of school, I love traveling, exploring new places, scrapbooking, reading historical fiction, and learning all I can about my new home on Orcas Island. My husband and I have four children, mostly grown, and one very spoiled dog.
Augusta McMurray, Program Supervisor and Lead Infant/Toddler Teacher
My interest in Early Childhood Education began in high school when I took an introductory class in ECE while assisting at a local preschool. Later, I earned a teaching certificate in Early Childhood Education from Yakima Valley College, a Bachelor of Arts in Religion with a minor in Philosophy from Hunter College, and a Master of Arts in Early Childhood Education, inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach, from the University of Colorado.
My husband, our two children, and I moved to Orcas Island in 2011, drawn by its beauty, slow pace of life, and tight-knit community. I've been teaching at Orcas Island Children’s House since 2013 and have been part of the early childhood education field since 2003. I am inspired to work with children every day because I believe each child has a unique gift to share with the world; I feel lucky to work in a profession where I can witness it.
My hobbies include traveling, reading, messing about with the ukulele, and spending time with friends and family.
Gemma Larsen, Lead Toddler Teacher
I moved here from the Philippines in 2023. At an early age, I learned how to take care of my younger brother. I also grew up living near many relatives including toddlers, and would often take care of my cousins, nephews, and nieces. I chose to work at Children’s House because I enjoy working with the kids. It reminds me of my life in the Philippines. I began training in early childhood education in 2023.
I learned to speak and write in tagalog at a young age. I am now at an intermediate level in English, and am taking weekly English classes to become more fluent. In my free time, I enjoy talking to my relatives in the Philippines, including my young cousins who are toddlers. I enjoy their sweetness and their fun demeanor. They always make us laugh. My husband and I enjoy hiking and trips to the mainland.
Kate Hill, Assistant Preschool Teacher
I have been a preschool teacher in the Sunflowers classroom at Orcas Island Children's House since September 2024. My journey into early childhood education began unexpectedly during high school, when I discovered that of all my jobs, being a nanny brought me the most joy. That experience sparked a passion that led me to pursue a position in early childhood education and eventually to the Pacific Northwest.
As a teacher, I am guided by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, which views children as capable, curious humans. What I love most about teaching is learning alongside the students and witnessing their growth as unique individuals. I believe that children have much to teach us, and find deep fulfillment in being part of their developmental journey.
Outside the classroom, I enjoy reading, spending time with loved ones, and exploring the natural beauty of Orcas Island—from its rainforests to its beaches. I am always eager to learn new things and embrace the island's spirit of curiosity and community.
Hello, I'm Anie Medina, and I'm an Assistant Toddler Teacher. I focus on creating a safe and loving environment where our youngest children can confidently explore and grow—it's a place I already know well, as both of my sisters attended here! I enjoy supporting their daily routines, encouraging their curiosity, and celebrating the tiny milestones they achieve while gaining independence. I am also bilingual and use Spanish to help Spanish speaking children to transition into our program, as well as supporting Spanish speaking parents communication with the staff.

“Hello! I’m Teacher Soeth, I am passionate about working with young children—helping them learn, express themselves through art, and grow as confident, curious individuals.
I grew up on Orcas Island in a large, close-knit family surrounded by many cousins, which inspired my love for nurturing and guiding children. I began my formal training in Early Childhood Education in 2020 while working as a Toddler Teacher, and I have continued to expand my experience and knowledge in the field ever since.
As a fluent speaker of both English and Spanish, I am excited to support the diverse communication needs of the children and families at Children’s House. I look forward to creating a joyful, inclusive learning environment where every child feels valued and inspired to explore, create, and grow.”

Mary Scott Hamblin, Lead Preschool Teacher
Originally from the UK, I recently moved to Orcas from upstate New York after raising my three sons. As a preschool teacher and qualified CNA, I’m passionate about creating a safe, nurturing environment where children can learn, grow, and explore through play. Having lived in several parts of the world, I bring a broad perspective and a deep love for helping children build confidence and curiosity.
Stephanie Cichy, School Chef
I began my culinary journey as a baker in Seattle, where I discovered that feeding people is my love language. After moving to the island more than 25 years ago, I turned that same care toward the earth, working as a gardener and landscaper to nurture both plants and people. Now, as our Preschool Chef, I hope to inspire a love of eating whole foods in our children—helping them discover the joy that comes from growing, harvesting, and making food that nourishes body and soul.
